Why do I have to exchange my blue paper driving license?

The blue paper driving license no longer fulfils current security standards. In accordance with a decision by the Federal Council, the blue paper driving license should have been exchanged for a driving license in credit card format by 31 October 2024. The blue paper driving license has not been valid since 1 November 2024 and can no longer be used as an official document.


What should I do if I still have a blue paper driving license?

If you still have a blue paper driving license and would like to continue driving, you can easily exchange your license for one in credit card format at your driver and vehicle licensing office in the canton of your residence. No other conditions must be fulfilled. The exchange is still possible, as your driving rights have remained intact even though the deadline for exchanging the license has passed.


What happens if I am pulled over by the police while driving with my blue paper license?

Since 1 November 2024, you risk a CHF 20.– fine if you are pulled over by the police and cannot present a driving license in credit card format. In addition, the controlling officers will instruct you to exchange your license at your driver and vehicle licensing office.


What should I do with my blue paper license if I no longer wish to drive?

Please contact the driver and vehicle licensing office in the canton where you live, so that you can hand in your blue paper license.


Does this regulation also apply to the blue boating license?

No, the blue boating license is not affected by this regulation.
